The parish is on the outskirts of the town of Ryde on the Isle of Wight. It was originally a small separate village, originally here in Saxon times. The roads lead from Ryde out onto the downs of the island. In Victorian times people from the mainland built houses in the village and wanted their own church. St. Michael’s was the second "new" parish in the area of Ryde, after Holy Trinity, to be carved out of the old Parish of Newchurch.
